30 Days of Thanksgiving: Day 10: Mold

First Aid Kit

Okay, you know this is gonna be a bit cheesy. And honestly, mold stinks. Literally. The last few weeks of the rainy season, with this constant humidity, has done it's annual damage on our material possessions. Belts, shoes, dishes, passports, board games, clothes, Christmas decorations--anything that hasn't moved much or been used much gets an odor and a fine layer of white and/or greenish mold on top. It is frustrating and nasty and tiring to deal with. So, the silver lining? We aren't accumulating as much "stuff" as we normally would. We know that if we buy it, it'll more than likely get ruined. That doesn't mean we are cured of our American materialism or that we have only the bare necessities--we still have WAY too much stuff even after only being here one year--but the mold helps us keep perspective of the stuff that truly matters and the stuff that will last longer than the next rainy season. The words of Jesus from Matthew 6:19-21 have never felt more real than here in Nicaragua:

Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moths and vermin destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moths and vermin do not
destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.
